Application Checklist

Your first step is to start the application online. In the application, you will answer some questions and upload the documents described below. Once you've completed all components you will submit the application, and can log back into the portal at any time to check the status of your application materials.

We are seeking candidates with at least 2 years of work experience. In the online application, you will upload your resume that outlines all relevant experience.

As part of the application, we ask you to answer three essay questions. You can either download a PDF of essay questions and upload that form once you've answered the questions, or upload your own document that answers these questions:

  • Why have you decided to pursue a Part-time Flex MBA program at this point in your professional career? Describe why you have specifically chosen to apply to the Part-time Flex MBA Program at St. Thomas, and how the program will support your short and long-term goals. (500 words)
  • Provide examples of two teamwork scenarios you have experienced professionally: one great experience and one challenging experience. Explain the team assignment/goal, your specific role and contributions, and what you learned about leadership and working towards a common goal from navigating through each situation. (500 words)
  • Describe a concept or an idea that you have put into practice, the challenges you faced, and why this accomplishment is indicative of your potential success in the Part-time Flex MBA Program. (500 words)

In your online application, you'll provide the names and emails of two people who will provide you a recommendation for the program. Your recommenders can be employers, co-workers or anyone who can speak to your professional abilities and fit for pursuing an MBA at St. Thomas. We will contact your recommenders directly to request that they complete a recommendation form or you can request that they compose a letter covering their relationship to you, how long they've known you, their impression of your ability to succeed in a graduate business program, and how graduate study would influence your professional growth.

To apply to this program, you must have a bachelor's degree in any subject from a regionally accredited U.S. institution (or the international equivalent). We need original transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions you have attended, sent directly from the school. The only exception is for advanced placement courses and study abroad transfer credits--we don't need transcripts for those.

Send via email: If your institution offers electronic transcripts, ask them to email your transcript(s) to gradadmissions@stthomas.edu

Send via mail: Paper transcripts must be submitted in sealed envelopes and signed by the appropriate university official. Send to:

University of St. Thomas
Graduate Records - Admissions
1000 LaSalle Ave, Box 5
Minneapolis, MN 55403-2005

International applicants: Please see the transcript requirements in the international checklist below.

The Part-time Flex MBA program offers three options to fulfill the testing requirement: the GMAT or GRE standardized tests or MBA Math, a self-paced, online preparatory course. If you are unsure which to choose, or to see if you qualify for an exam waiver, connect with your admissions representative.

To share your test scores with St. Thomas:

  • On the GMAT or GRE, there’s a section that asks where you’d like your score to be sent. Simply indicate University of St. Thomas.
  • For MBA Math, once you’re at 80% or higher on the 24 different modules, you’ll submit a transcript of the test to us. If you need help with the submission process, we’re glad to assist you.

To see if you qualify for an exam waiver, simply complete the Test Waiver Request form and follow the steps below:

Questions about your qualifications for an exam waiver? Schedule a 1:1 meeting with an admissions representative.

If you are an international student wanting to apply to the Part-time Flex MBA program, you must complete the standard application checklist:

  • Submit an online application
  • Have a phone interview with our admissions team

You also need to meet these international requirements:

English Proficiency Tests

If English is not your native language, you must submit scores from the TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo. If you have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand, you are exempt from taking an English proficiency test.

Minimum score requirements:

  • IELTS: minimum overall band score of 7.0, with a minimum score of 6.5 on each of the four sections.
  • TOEFL iBT (Internet-based test): minimum total score of 90, with a minimum score of 20 on each of the four sections. To submit your test score, you’ll need our institutional code: 6110. Official score reports (not photocopies) are required. Please keep in mind that scores may take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive in our office.
  • Duolingo: minimum score of 110

International Transcript Evaluation

To apply to the Part-Time Flex MBA program, you must have at least the international equivalent of a four-year bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. institution. If you completed your undergraduate or graduate work at a college or university outside of the United States, you must complete a transcript evaluation. There are two ways to complete this evaluation (choose one):

  1. Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) and World Education Services (WES) are independent transcript evaluation services that St. Thomas accepts for international transcript evaluation. If you choose to have ECE or WES do your evaluation, you will receive a copy of the evaluation. To use ECE or WES, visit either site  and choose the “Start Your Evaluation” option.
  2. If you already have a transcript evaluation, or would prefer to arrange your own evaluation, email the admissions office or call (651) 962-8800. We first need to ensure that the evaluation service you use is accepted by our university.

Paying for Your MBA Degree

Financing a graduate education often requires student loans provided by state and federal governments or private lenders. Before applying for loans, consider these resources.

Graduate Financial Aid

Each year, a number of incoming students earn this merit-based scholarship. When awarding this scholarship, the Admissions Committee considers work experience, test scores, academic record, application essay questions and letters of recommendation. When you apply to the Part-time Flex MBA program, you’ll automatically be considered for the Dean's Scholarship. No separate application is required.

Scholarships are available to applicants who demonstrate a history of academic and professional success, leadership, service and engagement in cultural or cross-cultural initiatives in previous academic, professional or volunteer settings.

Strong candidates for the Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship will have the following characteristics:

  • Domestic candidates with two or more years of full-time work experience after college graduation
  • Strong undergraduate academic record
  • Evidence of committed involvement in activities, programs or initiatives that foster inclusion, cross-cultural awareness, or a commitment to diversity in its many forms

To be considered, you must submit a statement to your admissions representative (no more than 300 words) describing the most relevant experiences that qualify you for this award.

If you’re an undergraduate alumni of St. Thomas, we’ll cover the cost of 3 credits of your Part-Time Flex MBA. No need to submit a separate application—you automatically earn this award upon admission.

Some employers provide tuition reimbursement as an employee benefit. While your employer will have the details, keep in mind they often require a minimum GPA so be sure to study!

If you’re a military veteran, we’ll waive your application fee. You can also defer your acceptance and any scholarships for one year if your plans are delayed by your service. In addition, we are a Yellow Ribbon school and award at the maximum Chapter 33 benefit rate (100%). Learn more through the University of St. Thomas Veteran Resources.
