A Forward-Thinking Leader in Health Care

Abbie Miller has always dreamed of being a doctor, so perhaps it’s not surprising that she became the first-ever physician in her family. She's a fierce advocate for all Minnesotans, helping solve the biggest problems in the health care delivery system today.

As a practicing physician for many years, Abbie was on the frontline of patient care. She witnessed the failures in our health care delivery system, such as lack of access to care, missed opportunities for earlier intervention, and unsafe care transitions after an illness.

These issues drove her to change her focus - from helping individual patients to looking for ways to improve the delivery of health care. Today, as Chief Medical Officer and Senior VP at Preferred One Insurance, she’s making the health care system work better for over 300,000 members.

Abbie provides education to members and employees about COVID-19, infection prevention, and vaccination in her daily role. A forward-thinking leader, she’s brought relief to COVID-19 patients, increasing coverage for testing, visits, and even hospitalization.

Abbie has also increased her shifts at a metro hospital to help provider colleagues care for many sick and dying patients. With so many unable to be with their loved ones, she’s been acting as a conduit to separated families during these incredibly difficult days.

The network of colleagues I gained through Opus continues to be the greatest reward.

As a physician, Abbie learned how to diagnose and treat, but was missing the tools to understand the business side of health care. The Health Care MBA at Opus College prepared her for the larger issues in health policy and administration, helping her speak the language to diagnose and manage these issues.

Abbie also serves on the Research Advisory Committee for Children’s Cancer Research Fund and the Chloe Barnes Rare Disease Advisory Council for Minnesota. Through her involvement, she advises on research, diagnosis, treatment, and education related to rare diseases.

Using her expertise in health care, Abbie is paving a path for future leaders in the field — inspiring them to improve the health care system and put patients in the center of the care experience.
